"I'm the Doctor...

So, basically... rip me off for the DC Comics universe reboot."

Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol (or, What? No Cyberking?!)

Compared to the Tennent-era Christmas specials, this year's Doctor Who Christmas special was a treat. There were no monsters, no Torchwood tie-ins, no giant Cyberking kicking the shit out of Victorian London; no RTD false sentiment, no farting aliens, and no flimsy plots. Instead, we got a charming, quiet Doctor Who take on Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It was a crazy, time-altering story that followed a well-constructed internal logic, but allowed for some unexpected twists. Smith, as he has been from The Eleventh Hour, was pitch-perfect, and guest-star Michael Gambon added some gravitas without being overwrought.

And the season 6 preview showed us we're in for a whole lot of River Song... what's not to love about that?!

BBC, whatever you do, keep Moffat happy and working on Doctor Who! He "gets" it, in a way RTD never did.

I con-fez

After only 13 episodes David Tennant feels like a distant memory.

You're doing a bang-up job, Mr. Smith. Keep up the great work.

Oh, and...
  • No, neither fezes no bowties are cool. Big points for trying, though.
  • Karen Gillan has got to be the sexiest companion since Lala Ward.
  • Moffat's through-line for the season worked; it didn't feel like a tacked-on like "Bad Wolf" did. I still don't really know what "Bad Wolf" was.

Doctor When II?

Feels like we've been waiting an eternity since we heard that Tennent would be passing along the keys of the TARDIS to when it's actually going to happen, and apparently we have yet to sit through more Rose Tyler and every other related character, including the clone of Tennant's Doctor, until we get there. Davies' legacy: more is more. But didn't he do that at the end of season four with Rose et al, the clone, Sarah-Jane, K9, Martha, the Daleks, Davros, etc. etc. etc. etc.?

C'mon, David, give Matt your sonic screwdriver and your fancy starscape backdrop.

Next timelord a serial killer?

If so, can he go back in time and make Dexter season 3 not happen? And maybe take Rita as his companion and dump her off on some distant planet somewhere?

Open letter to Stephen Moffatt....

Can we retire that one on the left for awhile, say Matt's first two or three seasons, and never see that one on the right again? Ta.

Doctor When?

It wasn't until speaking with a couple of friends that I realized the CBC has not yet shown "The Next Doctor", the Doctor Who Christmas Special. I download all these things through bittorrent as soon as they've aired on BBC UK, as I prefer to see them sooner than later, and also because I want to see all the related shows, like Doctor Who Confidential. Does the casual viewer of Doctor Who on CBC even know they've announced a new Doctor?

What is CBC doing? Given that this is a very popular show, why are they so haphazard with when they run it?

So, to those of you haven't seen the Christmas special, you now know it's set in Victorian England, features the Cybermen and a creature called the Cyberking who destroys chunks of London, and that Tennent is being replaced, all thanks to my previous posts.

Um... sorry?

The 11th Doctor

Memo to the internet: shut the F up and give the new fella a chance! Sorry to tell you, but you're not the casting director, producer, or executive producer of Doctor Who.

Six Random Thoughts on the Doctor Who Christmas Special

1. Cyberking? Really? Why does every RTD threat have be huge and destroy great chunks of London?!
2. Cyberking? Idea pinched from the Sentinels' Master Mold, d'you reckon?
3. Oooh, fair bit of slaughter going on in the graveyard. Bit much for the kiddies?
4. Damn, the new series' Cybermen redesigns are fantastic.
5. The Cybermen "fit" Victorian England better than they do the 21st century.
6. Russell is leaving soon. Huzzah!
